About the species

Targeting snook on Tampa Bay

An explosive, structure-loving gamefish that ambushes from mangroves, dock lights, and passes — the prize of the inshore slam.

Tampa Bay is one of the great inshore fisheries in the country — a 400-square-mile estuary of grass flats, mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, bridge structure, and passes that holds the classic Florida inshore slam: snook, redfish, and spotted seatrout.

Guides here run skiffs and bay boats to put you on tailing redfish on the flats, snook tucked under the mangroves and around bridge lights, and trout over the deeper grass. Spring through fall is prime for snook; redfish and trout cooperate year-round, and live bait, soft plastics, and topwater all earn bites.
